Percussion
The percussion section is one of the most misunderstood sections of the band. Often referred to as the “drums”, this is actually an incomplete description of what is involved in playing percussion. Percussionists learn to play a number of instruments, including mallet instruments like marimba, xylolphone and bells, battery percussion like the snare and bass drums, and accessory percussion instruments like the tambourine and triangle. As a result, the percussion section is the most select, hand-picked section of the band. In the 6th grade, beginner percussionist will focus on 2 main instruments - the marimba and a practice pad, before moving to more advanced instruments in 7th and 8th grade band. Watch the short videos below to see if percussion could be one of your top picks!
